Workshop Six: Respect in Reporting Campaign and Mainstream Media Coverage of Violence in Communities of Color

Afternoon Session: 2:45 pm – 4:30 pm

By now, you’ve probably heard the name Trayvon Martin. But what about Jordan Davis? Renisha McBride? Kimani Grey? Sadly, all of these are the names of young people killed in the last year because people, sometimes police, believe them to be a threat. Where do people get these ideas? What other impacts does media that perpetuates institutional racism have on young people of color and their communities?

Press Pass TV’s Respect in Reporting campaign addresses the role of the media in perpetuating stereotypes about People of Color, especially youth, and provoking violent responses. Additionally it looks at the way media’s coverage of violence in communities of color often revictimizes impacted families and friends while ignoring systemic and solvable issues. This workshop will teach participants how to use a suite of online tools to take action on these issues in their home community today!
